Basketball Player Warmup Tips

Basketball players of all experience levels can truly benefit from warming up before practicing or before competing in a game. Let's talk about the benefits of warming up and then talk about some specific exercises that a basketball player can conduct to ensure that they are prepared for their workout or game.

The human body largely consists of muscles and bones. Basketball players make extensive use of their muscles during workout sessions and during games. If the muscles are not sufficiently warmed up, the possibility exists for a muscle to become strained or even torn during practice or game play. The classic example of this situation is when a player starts practicing when just moments before the player was standing on the sidelines during cold weather. This is a recipe for the player experiencing muscle strains or worse. So what is the solution for this?

Players need to take the time to adequately warm up and stretch before they practice. Most sports physiologists recommend doing some jump ropes prior to doing any kind of stretching. If you don't have a jump rope, you may then want to run in place for at least five minutes. While you are actually running in place, it may seem as if though you have been doing it for a very long time. Try to use a stopwatch to make sure that you warm up for at least five minutes.

After you are adequately warmed up, you need to spend some time stretching your muscles. The most important tip to keep in mind when you are stretching your muscles is that you need to hold each stretch for at least 30 to 40 seconds. Neglecting to do so will result in the stretch not really being as effective as it could be.
